Decluttering for the now

If you tend to focus more on the past than the present, you might be hanging on to things that take you back there, in which case you are working against yourself moving forward.
You are not your past…
We are all changing moment to moment. Hanging on to who you were before and keeping things that remind you of that time can be a dismissal of who you are now.
Here are some questions to ask yourself that will help you begin de-cluttering the past from your life and acknowledging YOU right now.
  1. Ask yourself, if the furniture you have inherited is really serving you or is it just the memory of it from your grandmother’s home that makes you want to keep it? Consider taking a picture of it so you can have the memory of it and your space as well.
  2. How do you feel about who you are right now?
  3. What do you have in your home that feels like who you are now?  Do you love it?
  4. If you were to let the piece of furniture, or item go that doesn’t really fit anywhere in your home, what would happen?
  5. Could I replace this item with something that serves me better?

Things you can do right now.
  1.  Ask other family members if they would like items that you feel should be kept in the family but do not quite fit your home.  If the piece is worth money, look into Antique stores, e-bay or start letting people know about it.  With your intention to move forward sometimes the perfect scenario is created.
  2. If you have inherited collections that you don’t have interest in, ask other family members if they have interest or sell them on Craigslist, Facebook Market Place or E-bay online.
  3. If you begin sorting things into like categories you can better discern what to keep and what to pass on to someone else.
  4. Sometimes the items that served our family members well in their life are actually in the way in ours.  They have let those items  go and you can too.
